When the prom venue was chosen and booked, Yunjin had a vision she couldn’t be talked out of. It was cliché, already been done. But, to Yunjin, there was nothing she couldn’t outdo and ameliorate—and a prom theme wasn’t any different. Kazuha would tell everyone it was a pain in the ass trying to meet Yunjin’s demands; but, now that it was all over and the fruit of their labor was finally able to be appreciated, she couldn’t deny it was all worth it.
From the dark blue shaded ceiling drapes adorned with twinkling lights to the glossy black dance floor sparkling with silver specs and reflecting the lights above, it was like stepping into a celestial wonderland. Starry night seemed to be a staple theme for youth events, commemorating these moments as magical and full of whimsy. And Yunjin couldn’t stop herself from doing just that and more. The round tables were intricately positioned around the room, hugging the dance floor and creating a path. The tables were dressed in velvet covers, trimmed with silver beads, and in the center of every table were the handmade centerpieces Yunjin forced Kazuha to make with her. Cylindrical vases of varying heights, filled with water, small white flowers, and iridescent streamers, sat inside a square tray filled with crystal pebbles. On top of the water floats lit candles, adding to the calming ambiance. The room was filled with decor exemplifying the theme from white, black, and navy blue balloon displays, twinkling stars, white drapes along the walls, and a sparkling golden crescent moon. Lights everywhere, flickering and flashing. The star of the display, however, Yunjin would argue, was the four-tiered golden fountain in the center of the dance floor. Her favorite touch was the fountain that took her three months of convincing and revamping.
“Wow, it’s beautiful, Yunjin,” Soobin gapped, doing his best to talk over the music while admiring every inch of the room.
Yunjin grinned, watching as their classmates admired and relished in the venue, “I know right.”
“Any word from Chaewon yet?” Beomgyu interjected, hands fiddling with the sleeves of his white suit jacket.
“Not yet,” Yunjin sighed, tapping her phone just to see an empty notification screen.
She looked up at Beomgyu, watching how his eyes wandered the room and the way he chewed on his bottom lip. He wasn’t even this nervous during their performance week.
“Beomgyu,” Yunjin said, placing her hand on his shoulder, gaining his attention. “Everything is gonna work out just fine. We’ve got this.”
Beomgyu nodded hesitantly, taking a deep breath. Despite being so last-minute, his friends were more than willing to move heaven and earth to make this gesture possible. Especially Yunjin and Kazuha, who used their privileges as prom committee members to create as romantic of a scene as they possibly could.
Just then, Yunjin’s phone flashed, alerting the three to a message from Chaewon.
‘Pulling up now. Get ready!’
Beomgyu felt his entire body turn cold. He looked between Yunjin and Soobin, heart threatening to jump out of his chest.
Soobin grabbed his arm, “It’s go-time!”
Leading Beomgyu through the crowd of students, Soobin made a beeline toward the DJ booth where Kazuha and Taehyun were waiting. As soon as the two noticed them rushing toward them, they began preparing the equipment.
YN grabbed a fistful of the skirt of her dress, nervously following Chaewon into the building. She could hear the faint thumping of the music down the corridor from the entrance, making her palms feel clammy and her breath uneasy. She didn’t want to be here originally. The embarrassment of Beomgyu rejecting her promposal was bad enough; but then, subsequently rejecting his relationship proposal after the gritty events following, it felt wrong being here.
Even when Chaewon was helping her do her hair and makeup, all she could think about was everything Yunjin said about prom. About it being the perfect ending to her and Beomgyu’s year. Instead, she’s going without Beomgyu, having already ended their story the night of their final performance. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it had been on her mind since the moment Beomgyu opened up to her. She would never do something as horrible as Jieun, but she knew that being thousands of miles away while building her career would make it nearly impossible to be a present part of his life. She just needed confirmation from NYU, and when she got it, it was the only option she felt was right.
Still, walking up to the beautifully decorated venue entrance, being met with the music growing louder and louder, all she could feel was regret and sadness, not an ounce of excitement. Chaewon locked their arms together as they walked through the string light entrance toward the sheer blue curtain, pushing through and falling in awe with the dance hall.
YN couldn’t stop looking around, taking in every bit of what felt like walking through the night sky, unaware that the music was going dim. She didn’t even notice Chaewon taking her down to the dance floor, too busy admiring the lit-up path edged with cloud-like bushels. It wasn’t until Chaewon let go of her did she realized where she was led. She looked around her, noticing the dance floor was cleared with everyone surrounding the floor while staring at her. YN looked back for Chaewon, who held up her hands and assured her all was okay. Confused, YN looked back at the floor, looking around for any hint of what was going on. She felt a wave of emotion and goosebumps over her arms and neck as a song suddenly began playing through the hall. A painfully familiar tune.
A spotlight shines over the fountain, gaining everyone’s attention, beaming over to a figure standing at the DJ booth. YN recognized him immediately and couldn’t help the smile forming on her lips.
Beomgyu stretched out his hand over his eyes, trying to block out the light so he could see her more clearly. In his other hand, he held a microphone. As soon as he saw her, he felt his nerves melt away and all he could focus on was her. He brought the microphone up to his lips, gaze never leaving her, and slowly made his way down the booth to the floor.
Guess mine is not the first heart broken
My eyes are not the first to cry
YN stood frozen, hands clenching to the fabric of her dress, watching as Beomgyu made his way toward her. The spotlight followed every step he took, making it impossible to look away from him. The light contrast made it hard for Beomgyu to read the expression on YN’s face, but he only hoped she was still smiling as he stepped closer and closer.
I’m not the first to know
There’s just no getting over you
It was such a spur-of-the-moment idea to sing to YN at prom. His friends still don’t know what happened after he met with Mr. Kim, but whatever it was, had to be a big deal. Beomgyu described it as “the sign of all signs” and his second chance. It was the last push he needed to consider Yeonjun’s plan of making the most of the time they had left. And, he knew he had to do something big to show YN how deeply he felt. What better way was that than through music?
You know I’m just a fool who’s willing
To sit around and wait for you
Beomgyu stopped a few steps in front of YN, reaching his hand out for her to take. YN could see his hand trembling, making her chest heave. She reached out slowly, letting him take her hand and gently pull her toward the center of the floor.
But, baby, can’t you see
There’s nothing else for me to do?
I’m hopelessly devoted to you
A smile crept its way to Beomgyu’s face, his confidence gaining as he noticed the faint blush painted across YN’s cheeks, as he was finally able to see her face clearly. He couldn’t help but focus on her eyes, the way they stared up at him in adoration. He swore his knees would buckle any moment if he didn’t look away, but he just couldn’t. He took a chance to twirl her around once before bringing her in and swaying together as the spotlight dimmed and they were bathed under the soft twinkling of the string lights around them.
But now there’s nowhere to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
He took YN’s hand and held it up to his chest, squeezing gently. YN could feel how hard his heart was pounding through the palm of her hand. She looked back up at him, watching the way his eyes fluttered closed as he continued to sing. For a moment, she forgot people were watching them. It felt like it was just her and Beomgyu at this moment in time.
I’m out of my head
Hopelessly devoted to you
YN carefully released her hand from Beomgyu’s grip and reached up to cup his face. He followed her movements, gaze falling back to hers as soon as he felt the warmth of her palm on his cheek. He turned into putty whenever he felt her soft fingers trace along the base of his ear, along his jaw. Her touch was so tender and comforting. He wished they could stay this way forever.
Hopelessly devoted to you
“I’m hopelessly devoted… to you,” Beomgyu sighed the last note, hands reaching up to cup YN’s cheeks to carefully wipe away her tears.
The music faded, leaving them in silence. People hesitated to cheer Beomgyu’s performance, not wanting to spoil the moment unfolding before them. When Taehyun made an announcement about this ordeal before YN’s arrival, they were reluctant to oblige, but as they watched the way Beomgyu poured his heart out into every lyric, they wanted nothing more than bare witness. It wasn’t like Beomgyu to have this much passion for anything or anyone, but ever since taking part in the musical, it was like he became a different person. Happier. Full of life. Desire for the future.
“What was all this for? When did you plan this? What?” YN began to blabber, looking around at everyone and spotting her friends gathered by the DJ booth with smiles on their faces.
Beomgyu pulled her attention back to him, smiling. “I know you said you said you wanted to just be friends. But, YN, I don’t think I can do that.”
“You can’t?”
Beomgyu shook his head. “It took me too long to realize the feelings I have for you aren’t just infatuation. YN, I’m in love with you.”
YN’s eyes widened. She never expected to hear that word from him. It was a scary word to hear at their age, but for some reason, it felt more liberating than scary. It felt right.
“Kiss her!” Someone yelled, pushing the rest of the crowd to begin chanting.
Beomgyu looked at YN, raising his eyebrows as if asking if it was okay. But, before he could even open his mouth to ask, she grabbed the collar of his jacket and pulled him down, catching him off guard. Their lips crashed together, leaving Beomgyu bewildered for a moment before melting into her touch as their classmates cheered on. His hands found their place at her hips, where the hem of her bodice met the skirt of her floor-length dress. This was a feeling he could never get used to.
The DJ restarted his set, encouraging everyone to get back on the floor. Beomgyu pulled away, grinning from ear to ear, grabbing YN’s hand and pulling her away from the floor and toward the entrance to the corridors. There was barely anyone there, allowing them to catch a breath and enjoy each other’s company for a bit longer.
“I can’t believe you did all this,” YN said, gripping Beomgyu’s hands as she attempted to relax the adrenaline she felt.
“I had to do something big to tell you how I feel,” Beomgyu confessed. “Besides, I had to do something special, too, for that thoughtful promposal you gave me.”
YN slapped her hands over her face, embarrassment overtaking the rush. “I can’t believe you reminded me of that!”
Beomgyu laughed, attempting to pull her hands away, but she wouldn’t budge.
“I wanted to experience this night with you,” he sighed, giving up and pulling her against his chest instead. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on the top of her head. “I never saw myself going to prom, but when you asked me, all I could think about was how pretty you were gonna look.”
“Until you rejected me,” YN muttered.
Beomgyu squeezed her tight, a grimace falling over his face. “I deserve to be shamed for that. I know. I thought it was the right thing to do at the time, like a dumbass.”
YN picked her head up from her hands, looking up at Beomgyu as he looked down at her. She could see the regret he felt about that moment written all over his face.
“Just like me when I said we should just be friends, huh?” She asked softly.
“Depends,” Beomgyu sighed. “Would it make a difference if I told you that I might be joining you in New York come spring?”
YN’s eyes widened, her mouth falling agape. She didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t get her voice out. All she could do was stare at him in bewilderment and squeeze his arms from shock. Beomgyu found it amusing. It was similar to the way he reacted when Mr. Kim told him. He could recall that moment like it just happened. Sitting in the chair facing Mr. Kim’s desk like he always was throughout the year, only instead of being scolded for his missing assignments or poor attendance record, he was waiting to hear the reflection on his performance in the spring musical. Mr. Kim praised him for his outstanding performance and display of great showmanship, a drastic change from the usual threats of detention for being a smartass in class.
“When did this happen?! What are you talking about?!” YN finally said, managing to break through her initial shock.
Beomgyu laughed, “Mr. Kim called me into his office to discuss my final grade and sprung it on me out of nowhere!”
“What did he say? What happened? I need to know it all!”
“He just made me read an email from NYU. They invited me to apply for the music program for the spring semester! I guess they liked me?” Beomgyu shrugged, trying to act nonchalant.
Beomgyu was satisfied knowing he passed his final assignment ensuring his seat at graduation, but when he got up to leave, Mr. Kim urged him to sit back down. They had gone over everything they needed to, what more could there be to discuss? The grin on Mr. Kim’s face was borderline unsettling as he turned his computer screen for Beomgyu to see. With his eyebrows furrowed, Beomgyu steadily leaned forward to get a clearer view and began reading the open email tab adorned with a familiar purple emblem at the top.
Dear Mr. Kim, We wanted to thank you again for hosting us as we conducted a final review for fall semester applicants. Your drama department is brimming with talent and it was a delightful treat to be able to see the passion among your students. Everyone at NYU is more than enthusiastic about the prospects you are producing. One of your students in particular grabbed our attention especially. After discussing with the rest of the board, we are honored to extend an invitation to Choi Beomgyu to apply for the upcoming spring semester at NYU Tisch for our music program. Beomgyu demonstrated an elite level of music and vocal performance that moved our recruiters. Let us know if you or Beomgyu have any questions. We look forward to hearing from him.
“What did your parents say?” YN asked.
“They don’t know yet,” Beomgyu sighed. “No one knows actually. You’re the first person I told.”
“When are you going to tell them? Are you even applying?”
“Oh, I’m applying,” Beomgyu assured. “I never thought I could get an offer to pursue music. I don’t want to pass this up!”
No matter what Beomgyu did or said, his parents were adamant about having him take over the family market when he was old enough. All those summers spent working alongside his father in the market instead of practicing the chords his grandfather taught him on guitar. Those times they told him to keep his music down and stop “screaming” all the time. He knew it would be hard to tell them about the NYU offer. And, it would be nearly impossible to get their blessing to apply. But, this felt like a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make something of his old dream. Even without their support, he knew he had friends who would have his back and give him that push.
“I’m so happy for you,” YN said softly, tears brimming in her eyes. She wrapped her arms around his waist, squeezing him tightly. She was overcome with joy and excitement at the thought of Beomgyu not only pursuing his dream but pursuing it alongside her in New York.
Beomgyu felt his own tears finally fall as he wrapped his arms around YN, finding peace in knowing it wouldn’t be the last time. He wouldn’t have to say goodbye this summer. He wouldn’t have to “make the most” out of every moment until she left for New York. For weeks, all he could dwell on was the idea of never being able to see her once she left. But now, the tension and worries were gone. He could enjoy their time together while they had it because their time apart could be numbered. They would be able to meet again one day in the new year when spring returns to gift them more precious memories like the spring they met.

A/N: How I wish the ultimatum had gone. ;) This started as a one-shot, but I might do a few parts if there's interest for it.
--
Nesta did not really know what she expected when Cassian led her through the elaborately decorated river house in Velaris. An ambush and harsh scolding, perhaps. But when they arrived, no one was waiting for her. They did not go to the study, or to one of the many—also ornately decorated—sitting rooms. Instead, he led her through the empty corridors and to the doors that spilled into an overlarge green house.
The garden within looked as though Elain herself had carefully tended to it. Flowers of all shapes and colors lined neatly trimmed hedges and hung from pots dangling from the glass ceiling. Intricately carved wrought-iron benches were placed throughout the paved pathways. A trickling fountain could be heard. Warm, buttery light shone through the glass, sparkling against the array of vivid colors. It smelled as sweet as it looked, and suddenly Nesta was acutely aware of her dirty shoes and wrinkled gray dress.
In the center of the greenhouse, Elain stood behind a round table laden with an elaborate tea service. She was resplendent in a gown of pale lavender, the sun catching on the gold of her hair. Though there were four chairs, only three had been set with white and gold teacups and cutlery. In the center of the table was a pot of tea, with two, towering tiered serving platters filled with tiny confections: tea sandwiches, cakes, and scones, with jars of marmalade and honey and a pot of whipped cream.
Feyre was already seated, a gentle, if somewhat wary, smile on her face.
Elain tried to mimic her sister’s smile, but it did not quite reach her eyes. Her fingers were pale as they curled around the back of her chair. “Thank you for coming,” she said in greeting. “Please join us.”
Nesta did not move. “What is this?”
“Tea, of course,” Elain replied, that smile faltering just a bit. “And I made your favorite chocolate cake. They are bite size, you see.” She gestured to the bottom tier of one of the trays. Indeed, there were small squares of glistening chocolate.
Cassian coughed, reminding Nesta he was still there. Feyre nodded to him—in gratitude, and dismissal. Nesta could practically hear him hesitating, but he must have thought better of it. Without a word, he turned and left, leaving just the three of them in the greenhouse.
There was no sign of Amren, or Rhysand, either. Not an ambush, then. Slowly, she crossed the space and took a seat at the third setting. Elain seemed to visibly relax a bit as she took her own seat.
“I heard you had quite the night,” Feyre said as she poured Nesta a cup of hot tea.
Ah. It was to be a scolding after all. Perhaps she had run last night’s tab a little too high. Even so, she asked flatly, “Did you really have to drag me over here at nine in the morning for this?”
“It’s eleven,” Feyre pointed out, “and what do you mean, for this?”
Before Nesta could answer, Elain quickly added, “We just wanted to see you, Nesta. And to perhaps—perhaps have a little discussion.”
“A discussion,” Nesta repeatedly slowly. Her eyes narrowed on the way Elain avoided her gaze.
“We need to make some changes, Nesta,” Feyre said, her voice a bit hoarse. Beneath her eyes were a bit shadowed, as though she had not been sleeping well. “You do—and we do. I’ll take the blame,” she went on, “for allowing things to get this far, and this bad.”
“What things?”
“Do I really need to say it?”
Nesta leaned forward, cocking her head. Studying her sister. The shadows. The tension. “This is about you, isn’t it? You don’t really care if I’m drinking myself into oblivion or fucking strangers.” Elain flinched, but Nesta plowed on. “You only care what it does to you and your precious mate’s reputation.”
“That isn’t—”
Nesta stood. She knew where this was going, and she wanted no part of it. “Save it,” she snapped. “Both of you. I don’t want to hear it.”
“You are going to hear it,” Feyre said calmly. “And you are going to sit down.”
Nesta only steeled her spine, prepared to turn her back on them both, but it was the gentle touch at her wrist—Elain’s touch—that drew her attention. Kept her from fleeing.
“Please,” Elain pleaded. “Please, just…just sit, Nesta. Have some tea. Cake. If it is not to your liking, I can get something else. Just do not leave. Please.”
Guilt surged through her before she could stop it. Elain was begging—begging her to stay. Bribing her, in a way, with sweets and tea. Just like Feyre had to bribe her with rent money to come to Solstice.
Just do not leave.
Nesta never hated herself more.
“Please,” Feyre added. “Just listen to what we have to say.”
We.
Nesta glanced between them, wondering when, exactly, Feyre and Elain had become a formidable pair. It had always been Nesta and Elain. But not anymore, it seemed. Like Amren, Elain had chosen Feyre.
Because you pushed Elain away, a small voice reminded her. You pushed them all away.
She had, hadn’t she? Wasn’t that what she wanted? Nesta knew it was hypocritical to be angry at them for doing exactly what she wanted them to do. But she couldn’t help it. She was always so full of that anger, even if it was misplaced and unearned.
But—she would stay. Listen.
Stiffly, Nesta sat. Elain let out a small, relieved breath, and quickly scooped two tiny cake bites onto Nesta’s plate.
“I’m sorry,” Feyre croaked.
Nesta felt herself stiffen further. “For what?”
“After the war with Hybern,” Feyre explained, “with everything else that was going on, I know I should have—we should have—” she added, glancing to a guilt-ridden Elain, “been there for you. Been there to help you. I wasn’t, and I can admit that this is partially my fault.”
“That what is your fault?”
“This behavior, Nesta,” Elain said gently. “The drinking, the gambling, the…the males.”
“I understand how you’re feeling,” Feyre added.
“You know nothing about how I’m feeling,” Nesta snarled.
Feyre’s eyes hardened a bit. “Do not pretend you are the only person at this table who has felt loss. You are not the only daughter who lost their father.” At Nesta’s stony silence, Feyre drew in a breath and added, “As I said, we need to make some changes.”
“Go fix someone else and keep your self-righteous do-gooder nonsense out of my life.”
“You don’t have a life,” Feyre retorted. “And we are not going to sit by for another moment and watch you destroy yourself.” She put a tattooed hand on her heart, like it meant something. “I decided after the war to give you time, but it seems that was wrong. I was wrong.”
“Oh?” The word was a dagger thrown between them.
Elain flinched again at her sneer, but remained quiet.
“If you wish to continue destroying your life,” Feyre went on, “then do it with your own coin. I will no longer support or condone such behavior.”
Nesta straightened a bit, understanding her sister’s meaning. The purpose of this discussion. She would no longer fill her pockets with gold. “And how am I supposed to pay rent, exactly?” Nesta asked icily.
“The same way as everyone else. But know that your apartment building is being condemned.”
Shock racked through her. She glanced at Elain, but her sister was pointedly staring at her tea. “You wouldn’t dare,” Nesta snarled at Feyre.
But Feyre only straightened, determination lining every inch of her. “Rhys already visited the landlord. It will be torn down and rebuilt as a shelter for families still displaced by the war.”
Nesta nearly said he can’t do that, but of course he could. He was High Lord. “If you expect me to live here—”
Feyre let out a laugh that almost sounded like a sob. “Would that really be so awful?”
Nesta said nothing, which might as well have been a slap, for the hurt that briefly flashed across Feyre’s face.
But when her sister spoke, her voice was hard. “I know you would rather sleep on the streets than live here. You have made that abundantly clear.”
“Then where,” Nesta said, her tone mercifully icy, “am I supposed to go?”
Feyre looked over Nesta’s shoulder, her expression grave. She nodded once.
Nesta heard the greenhouse doors open. She turned to look, half expecting to see a familiar, smug Illyrian, ready to cart her off to some forsaken village in the middle of nowhere. But to her utter shock, Eris Vanserra, heir of the Autumn Court, strolled in.
“You’re coming with me,” he said, his voice devoid of emotion, “to the Autumn Court.”
Nesta just stared at him. He was dressed like a fine courtier in a fitted emerald tunic. His hands were in his pockets, an expression of boredom on his face. She just stared and stared, before she demanded, “What?”
Eris raised a brow. “Was something in that statement unclear to you?”
Nesta snapped her gaze back to Feyre, to Elain, who still would not look at her.
“As of this meeting,” Feyre clarified, her voice carefully calm, “you will fulfill your role as Emissary to the Night Court, and have been given your new assignment. As I said, if you want to ruin your life, you will do it on your own coin.”
Nesta felt her spine locking. “I am not a member of this court.”
“You live in this court. You spend this court’s money. You were appointed as our human emissary.”
Nesta shot to her feet. “You really expect me to go with him? Him?” she added in emphasis, throwing her chin in Eris’s direction. He did not seem remotely bothered by her tone.
“Eris is our ally,” Feyre said, though there was a note of wariness in her voice. “And there are things you can learn from him.”
“Like what?” she snarled.
“Like how to dress properly, for starters” Eris said, his eyes landing on her stained shoes with distaste.
“I told you to remain quiet,” Feyre hissed at him.
He just shrugged. The gesture was careless, half reminding Nesta of Rhysand. All the more reason to hate him. With one more sneer at her rumpled appearance, he turned to go. “Find me when you’ve put the claws away, Nesta Archeron. We have work to do.”
He closed the doors, and Nesta whirled back on her sister. “I cannot believe you would do this to me.”
“Do what?” Feyre shot back. “Ask you to actually earn the money that gets dumped into your account? To fulfill your role as Emissary and I don’t know, find a purpose?”
“Oh?” Nesta was seething now. “And what do you do, High Lady? You spend all your time picking out rugs for this ridiculous house and rearranging the furniture. And, apparently, tearing down entire apartment complexes that displaces your own people.”
“Nesta,” Elain warned anxiously.
“Every tenant has been well compensated and offered new lodging,” Feyre replied, not rising to Nesta’s bait. “Your building is not the only one being condemned, but one of many.”
“Oh, I am sure it was the first one on your list though, wasn’t it?”
“We are trying to help you, Nesta,” Elain insisted.
“I don’t need your help!” she shouted, half expecting her sister to flinch, but she didn’t. Instead, she remained infuriatingly calm.
“But you do,” Elain said softly. “Just as Feyre once did. Just as I did. And you were there for me, sitting by my side when I was wasting away. But I cannot…cannot sit by your side for this, Nesta. For months and months, we have watched you waste away. You…you seem to have no purpose, no peace, no real will to live.”
Nesta said nothing. Could barely hear over the roaring in her ears. But she did not flinch away when Elain slid her arm across the table and grabbed her hand.
“You are so smart, Nesta,” Elain went on gently. “Your mind and your sharp tongue are your weapons. You are a warrior in the ballroom, among all those vultures that would call themselves our friends and allies. Why not put those strengths to use?”
“Was this Rhysand’s idea?” Nesta asked quietly. She hated the thought that it probably was.
“No.” Elain hesitated a moment before she said, “It was Azriel’s.”
Nesta’s gaze snapped to her sister, at that shocking revelation. “What?”
“Cassian suggested you learn to train as a warrior. Amren—Amren had other ideas.” Elain flinched a bit. Nesta didn’t want to know what those were, but she imagined they were even less savory. “Azriel has been wanting to place a permanent spy in Autumn, and suggested you.”
“Why me?” She couldn’t begin to understand it. She hardly spoke to Azriel at all, hardly knew the male enough for him to know a thing about her.
“As I said, your strengths play into this task.”
“So I am to be a spy, and an emissary?”
“You wouldn’t be the only one,” Elain said quietly.
Nesta’s eyes sharpened as she looked to her sister and grasped her meaning. “You?”
For some reason, color bloomed on Elain’s cheeks. “I wouldn’t be stationed in Autumn, but I have been learning some things from Azriel. And Nuala and Cerridwen." It took Nesta a moment to remember who they were—Elain’s half-wraith friends. “There have been discussions around my own contributions. How I might be helpful.”
“You have done enough,” Nesta said a touch too harshly.
But Elain only steeled her spine. “That is not for you to decide.”
Nesta blinked at her, at her sister’s boldness.
“Eris is our ally,” Feyre interjected, “but we cannot fully trust him. We need someone we can trust to monitor his and his father’s movements. And someone who can strengthen our relations with the Autumn Court.”
“Why not use your mate?” Nesta hurled at Elain, making the word a mockery. She immediately hated herself for asking the moment the words left her mouth.
But to her surprise, Elain said, “We are.”
Nesta could not quite hide her shock. “You are speaking to Lucien?”
“We are working together,” Elain clarified. “He has his own motives and I have mine.”
Cryptic.
But then Feyre added, “He seeks to break Vassa’s curse.”
Ah. Nesta remembered then—that Lucien was living with Vassa. Had been for some time now. She also remembered the last time she had faced the High Lord of the Autumn Court. She doubted the male would be remotely welcoming.
“I know this probably feels like a punishment,” Feyre went on. “But you cannot keep living like this, Nesta. So I am asking you to do something with your life, something I believe you will thrive at, and something we need as a court.”
“You are ordering, not asking.”
Feyre sat back. “I am giving you an assignment if you wish to continue being paid. If you refuse, I will not fight you. It’s your choice. But you will need to find another way to earn your coin.”
“You have a place here,” Elain added. “There is a room for you, close to mine, if you wish to refuse.”
Nesta understood the ultimatum, then. Take this assignment, contribute to society and be useful, and get paid. Refuse, and either live in this ridiculous estate, where she will be judged and hated for being a worthless piece of trash—or find her own way.
For a moment, her pride nearly won out. She wanted to say she did not need Feyre’s money, but that was a lie. She had always relied on someone else to provide for her; what would she do now? What talents and skills did she have? The idea of lodging at the brothel and making an earning as a whore or a tavern maid…no. She had not stooped that low just yet.
Nesta looked to Elain, at her sister’s eager eyes filled with naïve hope. She looked to Feyre, who kept her face carefully blank. But anxiousness furrowed her brows. Both of them desperately wanted her to agree.
A spy—and Emissary. And Elain…Elain was involved in this somehow, too. So was Azriel and Lucien, and Vassa by extension. A very strange and unexpectant group. About a million things could go wrong.
But Nesta plopped back down, slumping in her chair. “Fine,” she said, not bothering to sound pleasant. “Summon the Autumn bastard back.”

I continued it. Original Post
The room behind the door is bleak, entirely too muted and too quiet for the spitfire of sea and light normally resting within. He raps on the door one more time after opening it, just in case Gordon couldn’t hear, and the mass on the bed shifts under the blankets with a hiss.
Virgil winces. He nudges the door the rest of the way open and slides the food tray on the table beside the bed. The steam from the warm soup dances up towards the ceiling. Gordon’s appetite might be just fine, but Virgil figured it was better to go with safe options. It’s soup, saltines, and water. The lack of movement despite the aroma of chicken broth that fills the room gives him his answer.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Virgil asks.
He finds a spot to sit on the bed where Gordon’s feet are. As much as he wants to clasp his shoulder or rub his back and comfort through the throes of pain, when Gordon’s at his worst, it’s his ankle that’s furthest from the agony emanating through his nervous system.
“No.”
“Do you want me to talk, then?” Virgil offers. “I can if you want. Whatever you need.” The form trembles, but eventually Gordon pushes back the comforter just far enough past his face for Virgil to catch a glimpse of the muddled, honey-brown of his eyes.
He takes the curious gaze as permission to launch into whatever his mind conjures, knowing that his own interests will be enough of a distraction without reminding Gordon of what, at the moment, he can’t pursue outside the four walls of his bedroom. Virgil stays clear of the weather and the ocean and the pool, and instead rambles about the new song his favorite pianist has just released, an artist he’s following that’s been working with 3D sculptures made from scraps found in the trash mines, and his next character idea for the tabletop game John runs for the family.
Virgil settles himself more comfortably at the foot of Gordon’s bed as he talks. He’s going for casual ease, filling the silence with his own swirl of thoughts to replace what normally was Gordon’s chaotic energy and Gordon’s constant stream of consciousness. He doesn’t even know if Gordon’s really listening; even if only by half it’s something, but he’s been quiet.
Midway through his musings about the scale of acceptable types of berries, he feels the muscle under his hand tighten. Virgil sympathetically rubs circles into Gordon’s calf while he rides the wave. It sucks. It sucks more for Gordon, there’s no doubt, but there’s a special kind of helplessness and misery Virgil feels when his siblings are suffering and he can’t do anything about it.
It’s an instinct to hold his breath while he counts out the duration of the spasm.
Eventually the tension alleviates, and Virgil hops up to quickly scour the closet in Gordon’s connecting bathroom for a rag to wet. He warns him a few seconds before he touches his face since his eyes are scrunched shut, but gently Virgil dabs at the sweat on his forehead, cooling him down from the exertion of fighting through the tremors.
Gordon sighs deeply, watching him and tracking him through a glazed expression.
“-rzy,” Gordon tells him.
“Hm?”
“Yer crazy,” Gordon clarifies, staggering through the words, “if you think blackberries are more acceptable than blueberries.”
“Strawberries are top tier. We can agree on that though?”
“Only with chocolate.”
It’s a non-argument, banter that’s only a debate on principle because, in truth, Virgil has no hard opinions on fruit and actually much prefers them mixed into a smoothie anyway. But he scrunches up his nose for effect.
“What’s better than strawberries?” he challenges, pulling the cloth away.
“Grapes.”
“Those are not berries.”
“They are botanically.”
“Well, botanically, you shouldn’t be ranking fruit based on the addition of chocolate.”
“False. Technically the cacao pod is a fruit too.”
“Hm, since we are on the subject,” Virgil prods, diverting the conversation back to more important matters, “you should try to eat.” He takes the package of the saltine crackers and rips the sleeve open, placing it on top of Gordon’s comforter where he can reach easily.
One, two are eaten, a third nibbled on.
“OK.”
Virgil lifts an eyebrow. “Ok?”
“Yeah, ok,” Gordon confirms. “Talk for real.”
“We got your scans back.” It had wrecked Virgil trying to get them; whatever agony Gordon felt had hit suddenly during his morning exercises. He remembered Gordon clutching at him: he’d been damp with chlorinated water, stuck in the shallow end, and any movement to get him to the infirmary shattered through him. The scanner had pinpointed his back, but it wasn’t strong enough to isolate the cause. He knew now. “You popped a screw.”
Gordon sucks in a breath but manages to smile. There’s no joy behind it. “I bet Alan loved that.”
“Huh?”
“You tell him I had a screw loose?”
“Oh. Oh no. Not at all. He’s worried, but no Alan doesn’t know anything yet. Yours to tell.”
Gordon hums, then says, “Such a little thing. It feels like it’s everywhere. Can you -uh- show me?”
Virgil’s reluctant, but carefully, he ghosts a fingertip in a circle along the ridge of Gordon’s spine where their scans showed the shifting pieces of metal. He doesn’t touch exactly where it is, trying as much as he can to avoid aggravating the injury further. It needs surgery. Gordon knows something like that needs surgery, which means hospitals and all the memories and terrors that come with it.
Virgil retracts his hand, but Gordon reaches for it. “You’ll be taking me.”
It’s not presented as a question. Virgil nods anyway.

WIP Wednesday: The Azkaban Letters Chapter 9: The Mothers
Long Snippet: (This is Draft)
The fourth-floor landing, including the runner carpets, were designed to celebrate the native summer heather. Harry let his hand run along the carved oak railings until he reached the last door on the right. It was to Narcissa’s sitting room. Only a few pillars that stretched from floor to ceiling broke his rhythm.
He knocked before pressing down on the lever to open it. “Narcissa. Oh, I’m so sorry. I’ll go,” Harry said as he saw Narcissa, Queenie Greengrass, Violette Bullstrode, and Gwendolyn Goyle having high tea. They were dressed in their finest pastel robes sitting at the white linen covered round table in the centre of what Narcissa now called the Ladies drawing room. The lavender drapes, hiding two large windows on either side of the balcony’s French doors, had been pulled. He could only imagine the doors being opened and fresh spring air blowing through. He began to shut the door.
“Harry!” Narcissa said so abruptly that he froze before he could shut it completely. “Please, come in. We would enjoy your company. I didn’t know you’d be home so early.”
Harry opened the door a bit further. “I didn’t expect to be. I should’ve notified you. I—I’m not dressed for high tea,” he said with grin.
“Come in, Harry. We’ll forgive you this time,” Queenie Greengrass said with a quick smile. She lifted her wand and an additional chair made its way between her and Gwendolyn Goyle.
“Okay,” Harry said. “But I do promise next time to wear my robes.” This he’d learned from Narcissa that it showed respect for the hostess serving high tea. Their normal tea-time meetings were casual and usually held in this same room but by the fire or on the first floor, a few times in a small conservatory they discovered off the kitchen, which had a door that led out into the back garden.
Gwendolyn poured his tea for him. He added his normal two sugars and splash of milk. He eyed the three-tier silver tray knowing to start at the bottom with the sandwiches first. “We were discussing Halloween and the upcoming holidays. We have decided we will take a stroll along the forest edge to collect holly, juniper, and pine for the wreaths and garland,” Narcissa said. Harry shook his head. Thinking of Christmas was so far from his thoughts. His instinct was to say ‘whatever you want’ but he heard Draco’s voice push through. His voice telling him that there were things to live for. And since his first Christmas at Hogwarts, he loved Christmas. He needed to step back and allow these joyous moments back into his life.
“That sounds lovely. And a large tree in the entryway, I hope,” Harry replied. “We’ll have to ask the house-elves if there are any ornaments, but making our own could be nice, too.” He almost laughed seeing the pleased expressions on the four witches’ faces. Gwendolyn’s was the warmest. Her face was round, much like the rest of her. Her dark brown eyes expressed her emotions freely. She was known to roll them when Narcissa spoke at length about the treasures now lost at Malfoy Manor. “Are there any plans for Halloween?”
The witches’ sitting room became quiet. Harry glanced up and saw that the mothers were all looking at each other. Narcissa cleared her throat. “Harry, traditionally we would decorate, have a feast, and there would be games. But we know the date also coincides with the night of your parent’s passing.”
“Is there something I should do to mark the event?”
“There is if you choose to,” said Gwendolyn. “In our home, we usually leave an empty spot at the table, then have a toast after dinner and a personal story or two is told.”
“We do the same, but also place an altar by the hearth. Pictures of those we’ve lost are placed on it along with the honouring of Sahmain as a harvest feast. Gourds, squashes, apples and even breads are placed there, too,” Violette said.
“Oh, that is lovely,” Narcissa said. “We should see if Florean will bake some bannoks. And I’ll ask the elves to make sure we have a good number of pumpkins. Jack o’ lanterns are a must.”
“I think that all would be really nice,” Harry said. “Though I don’t have any personal stories to tell. I’ll leave the decorating up to all of you on that front. It’s likely I won’t be here much as per the usual.”
“So, Halloween is settled then,” Narcissa said. “Oh, and Harry, remember some of us were at Hogwarts when your parents were there. We might be a tad older, but I still have a few vivid recollections of them in school.”
“Violette and I were just a year older,” Gwendolyn said. “We have stories.”
“And they’d be <i>nice</i> stories?” Harry said with a hopeful laugh.

He chuckled. "I have seen photos. With the tiered cake trays. It looks so fancy. Not at all what I'm used to. I bet those little cucumber sandwiches feel so tiny in my hands. But - I am looking forward to it. I've never just taken time to do something nice like that, just to experience it. I've spent so long protecting the world, I've never taken the time just to appreciate it."
Steve posed for the photo and took some photos of the building itself. He tucked the camera away again and they went inside. The scale of the building was mind blowing. He looked up at the ceiling and the stained glass windows that spanned the walls. "Holy..." he said softly. "You could let a dinosaur out in here and it wouldn't touch the ceiling."
He laughed at her mention of kissing and he bumped her with his shoulder. "Yeah, the kissing is usually something you have to pay extra for," he joked. "And here I am getting them for free."
@agentpeggycarterrogers
“They’ll have sandwiches, cakes, scones, and we can always get more if you need more, darling.” She bumped her shoulder to his. “I wouldn’t want you to go hungry. But of course, we can always stop for something else. Don’t forget - mother has a big dinner planned for us tonight.”
Peggy followed his gaze up to the top of the church. “It is quite majestic, isn’t it? Yes, I think we have time to go inside. Shall we take a picture outside first, though?”
They asked another tourist who happily obliged, returned their camera, and Peggy took Steve’s hand again.
“Yes, sweetheart, this is where all the weddings are - and yes, it does have a massive burial ground with monarchs and important people, and coronations and jubilees happen here too. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were just married here two years ago. The Abbey was previously a Catholic church, but I don’t know when it changed denominations. Shall we go inside?”
Peggy laughed at being called a wonderful tour guide. “How many tour guides offer their guests kisses between tour stops? This is quite the unconventional tour, isn’t it?”

Six Stunning False Ceiling Designs
Creating a stunning ambiance in your home often begins from the top down. Down ceilings, also known as drop ceilings, can add depth, style, and a unique character to your spaces. Whether’re looking to enhance your room, bedroom, or even your kitchen, the right ceiling design can create a striking focal point and elevate the overall aesthetic.
1. Modern Minimalism:
Embracing a clean and understated look, modern minimalist ceilings focus on simplicity while still making a statement. This design often features unfinished materials, straight lines, and neutral colors.
Key Features:
Use of White and Light Colors: White or light paint can help to reflect more light and give an airy feel.
Straight Lines and Geometric Shapes: Incorporating straight lines in your down ceiling design can make the space feel orderly and spacious.
Integrated Lighting: Modern minimalism often includes recessed lighting fixtures, providing an uncluttered look while ensuring the space remains well-lit.
Consider opting for a flat white ceiling with a single recessed light in the center for an elegant yet simple look that draws the eye upward.
2. Wood Accents:
If you’re after warmth and a touch of rustic charm, wood accents in down ceilings could be the perfect choice. Whether you prefer a full wooden ceiling or wood paneling, this design adds a comfortable ambiance to any room.
Key Features:
Natural Finishes: Use untreated or lightly stained wood for an organic feel.
Wood Beams or Slats: Incorporate visible beams or slats for added texture and character.
Warm Lighting: Pair with soft, warm lights to enhance the inviting atmosphere.
Personal Touch: In my own dining room, we added a wooden beam ceiling that instantly made space feel more intimate and inviting for family gatherings.
3. Cove Ceilings:
Cove ceilings are a luxurious and elegant option. This design features a curved transition between the walls and ceiling, creating a soft, flowing look that’s visually appealing.
Key Features:
Smooth Curves: The gentle slope can soften the sharp angles traditionally found in architecture.
Lighting Options: Cove ceilings allow for built-in LED lighting, highlighting their curves and adding a subtle glow.
Height Enhancement: This design can visually raise the ceiling height, making the room feel more open.
When designing your own cove ceiling, consider painting the inner curve in a different color to add dimension and interest.
4. Tray Ceilings:
Another stunning ceiling choice is a tray ceiling. This design consists of a recessed area in the center of the ceiling that can be painted or adorned for a dramatic effect.
Key Features:
Depth and Dimension: By creating a tiered effect, tray ceilings add visual interest and layers to the space.
Contrasting Colors: Choosing a different color for the inset can create a striking focal point.
Custom Lighting Solutions: Enhance the elegance by incorporating chandeliers or recessed lighting within the tray.
Consider this: The depth of the tray can vary from a subtle recess to more pronounced layers, depending on your style preference.
5. Metal Ceilings:
For a truly unique and modern aesthetic, metal ceilings can provide a striking look. Available in various finishes and styles, metal can transform a simple room into a contemporary masterpiece.
Key Features:
Diverse Material Choices: Choose from aluminum, copper, or tin for different effects and durability.
Textured Patterns: Opt for embossed or stamped designs that reflect light beautifully.
Industrial Vibes: This style works exceptionally well in kitchens, basements, or modern lofts.
Warning: While metal ceilings are appealing, be mindful that they can amplify sounds; soundproofing may be necessary for certain spaces.
6. Painted Ceilings:
Sometimes all it takes to transform your ceiling is a splash of color. Painted ceilings can add personality and vibrancy to any room without needing structural changes.
Key Features:
Bold Colors: Make a statement by choosing bold, dark colors like navy blue or forest green.
Patterned Painting: Consider intricate designs or stencils for a more decorative approach.
Cohesive Theme: Ensure that the ceiling design color complements the walls and décor to maintain harmony in your design.
Tip: For a softer feel, opt for pastel shades or two-tone combinations that blend seamlessly.

7 Ways to Add Hidden Storage to Your Built In Wardrobe
A well-organised wardrobe can make a significant difference in the ease of your daily routine and the overall appearance of your living space. However, finding enough storage space can be challenging, especially if your wardrobe is already packed to the brim. Fortunately, there are numerous clever ways to add hidden storage to your built in wardrobes Sydney, allowing you to maximise every inch without sacrificing style or accessibility. From utilising overlooked spaces to incorporating multi-functional furniture, here are seven innovative ideas to help you create a more organised and efficient wardrobe.
Utilise the Back of Doors
Over-the-Door Organisers: Invest in over-the-door organisers that can hold shoes, accessories, or even toiletries. These are easy to install and keep items within easy reach. Look for clear pockets or stylish fabric options that match your wardrobe's aesthetic.
Pegboards and Hooks: Mount pegboards or hooks on the inside of wardrobe doors. This can be perfect for hanging jewellery, scarves, belts, or ties, freeing up shelf and drawer space. You can customise the pegboard with various hooks and accessories to suit your specific needs, making it a versatile solution.
Mirror with Storage: Consider installing a mirror with hidden storage behind it on the inside of the wardrobe door. This can be a great place to store small items like makeup, jewellery, or other accessories. It combines functionality with a sleek, modern look.
Incorporate Pull-Out Shelves and Drawers
Pull-Out Shelves: Installing pull-out shelves can make items stored at the back easily accessible. These shelves can be designed to fit your wardrobe dimensions, ensuring no space is wasted. They are particularly useful for storing shoes, bags, or folded clothes that are difficult to reach.
Hidden Drawers: Hidden drawers within larger compartments can store smaller items like socks, undergarments, or accessories. These can be tucked away behind a sliding panel or a false front, adding an element of surprise and sophistication. Drawers with soft-close mechanisms can also prevent items from getting disorganised.
Tiered Sliding Trays: For an added layer of organisation, consider tiered sliding trays that stack within a single drawer. These trays can help categorise items such as jewellery, makeup, or even office supplies if your wardrobe doubles as a workspace.
Add a Secret Compartment
False Bottoms and Panels: Create a false bottom in a drawer or add a secret panel at the back of a shelf. This space can be used to store valuables or items that are not frequently needed but still need to be accessible. These compartments can be particularly useful for storing important documents, cash, or sentimental items.
Hidden Boxes: Integrate boxes into the back of shelves or at the bottom of hanging spaces. These boxes can blend seamlessly with the wardrobe design, providing a hidden spot for important documents or personal items. You can use decorative boxes that match your wardrobe’s interior for a cohesive look.
Compartmentalised Shelves: Design shelves with built in compartments that are concealed by removable panels. This approach allows you to create several small hidden spaces within a larger shelf area, perfect for storing smaller items discreetly.
Use the Ceiling Space
Overhead Storage: Consider adding shelves or cabinets at the top of the wardrobe, close to the ceiling. These can store seasonal clothing, extra bedding, or items that are not used daily but still need a dedicated space. Utilising the height of your wardrobe can significantly increase your storage capacity.
Suspended Baskets: Utilise baskets or bins that can be suspended from the wardrobe ceiling. This method keeps items off the main shelves and makes use of vertical space that is often overlooked. Opt for clear or labelled baskets to make finding items easier.
Hanging Rods: Install additional hanging rods higher up in the wardrobe for storing items like scarves, belts, or even hats. These rods can be retracted when not in use, keeping the main space clutter-free.
Install Hidden Hooks and Racks
Retractable Hooks: Install retractable hooks that can be pulled out when needed and tucked away when not in use. These are great for hanging items temporarily without cluttering the main storage areas. They can be used for anything from hanging outfits for the next day to organising bags or hats.
Hidden Racks: Consider hidden racks that slide out from behind a panel. These can be used for hanging ties, belts, or even lightweight clothing, making use of narrow spaces. You can also use these racks for hanging delicate items that need to be kept separate from the rest of your wardrobe.
Magnetic Strips: Install magnetic strips on the sides of your wardrobe to hold metal items like scissors, tweezers, or even small tools. This keeps them easily accessible yet out of sight.
Make Use of Dead Space
Corners and Gaps: Often, corners and narrow gaps are underutilised. Custom-made corner shelves or rotating carousels can maximise these areas, making them functional and accessible. These solutions are ideal for storing shoes, bags, or even books and other accessories.
Behind Hanging Clothes: The space behind hanging clothes can be equipped with slim shelves or racks. This can be ideal for storing flat items like purses, shoes, or even folded clothing. You can also use this space for additional hanging rods for smaller items.
Under Shelf Baskets: Install baskets that hang from the bottom of existing shelves. These can provide additional space for storing smaller items without taking up too much room. They are perfect for storing items like gloves, hats, or even small electronics.
Incorporate Furniture with Hidden Storage
Storage Benches and Ottomans: If space allows, include a storage bench or ottoman within the wardrobe area. These pieces can provide seating and additional hidden storage for bulky items like blankets or seasonal clothes. They are also great for putting on shoes or simply as a place to sit and organise your wardrobe.
Multi-functional Furniture: Opt for furniture pieces with built n storage, such as beds with drawers underneath or nightstands with hidden compartments. These can be seamlessly integrated into the wardrobe space, providing extra storage without adding clutter. You can also find dressers with hidden compartments or tables with lift-top storage.
Convertible Furniture: Consider furniture that can change function, such as a mirror that opens to reveal a storage cabinet or a desk that transforms into a storage unit. These versatile pieces can maximise your space and keep your wardrobe area tidy and organised.
By incorporating these hidden storage solutions, you can transform your built in wardrobe into a highly efficient and organised space. Each idea offers a unique way to maximise storage without compromising on design or functionality, ensuring that every inch of your wardrobe is utilised to its full potential. With a little creativity and the right solutions, you can keep your wardrobe clutter-free and stylishly organised.
